Naysayers said he couldn’t compost with worms outside or have hoop houses sustain food in the Wisconsin winter, but he took the challenge and did it anyways. Will Allen, the pioneering founder and CEO of Growing Power is ready to take on another challenge. Growing Power and the Kubala Washatko Architects, Inc have teamed up to design the first ever working vertical farm. Once built on Growing Power’s current site in Milwaukee, the 5-story vertical farm will provide much needed space for growing food and educating people about the good food revolution. The exceptional energy and water efficient design will further Growing Power’s position as a leader of sustainable food and environmental innovation.
The City of Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Common Council have already approved the rezoning request which was signed during a press conference at Growing Power on December 31, 2010. The building is expected to cost 12 million dollars; fundraising will begin soon. Will explains the need for this construction best, “I believe it is our privilege and duty to create an urban agricultural training and demonstration site that directly reflects our commitment to sustainability and that will serve as a model for other programs throughout the country.”
